The night light is versatile for children and adults. On one hand, they are safety aids that help illuminate stairs, fixtures and other potential obstacles. Night lights may also be useful for toddlers who are afraid of darkness and breastfeeding mothers visiting the nursery late at night. In addition to bedrooms, night lights can be used in the bathroom.
Of the 90 million night lights purchased nationwide each year, hundreds of thousands have been recalled due to potential safety hazards for certain products. The National Association of Registered House Inspectors noted the following safety issues related to night lights:
Fire Hazard: Night lights, especially incandescent lights with CFL bulbs, can generate a lot of heat, which can cause them to melt and catch fire. Although nightlight-related fires are rarely reported, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) receives about 10 reports of lighting nightlights of various combustible materials such as sheets and bath towels each year. To minimize the risk of fire, the owner of the night light should:
Make sure that the night light is not in physical contact with or near the bed, and that there are no curtains or any other combustible surface covering the carpet.
Do not cover the night light with materials that can catch fire, such as paper or cardboard.
Use low-power bulbs that do not easily overheat.
Poisoning: Some night lights contain a toxic substance called dichloromethane (usually used as a paint remover), which can be fatal when inhaled or in contact with human skin. If these night lights fail, the device should be disposed of in a safe manner immediately.
Electric shock: Nightlights must never be used outdoors, because if they get wet, there is a danger of electric shock. This also applies to covered areas that are prone to moisture, such as garages and terraces with swimming pools or hot tubs. In addition, the danger of electric shock at night is greater if the equipment is powered by extension cords or switchboards.
