Find a time and a quiet place to leave you alone. Try to choose a space that makes you feel relaxed. Your bedroom is usually a comfortable place for dilation therapy. Before you begin, relax the pelvic floor muscles and take a deep breath.
First, enter a comfortable position:
Lie down with your feet flat on a bed or sofa with your knees slightly bent.
Spread your legs so that they are as wide as your shoulders. If this is found to be a problem, you can place the pillow under your knees for support.
Make sure you can easily touch the opening of your vagina with your hand. If needed, use a hand mirror to look at the vaginal opening.
Find your pelvic floor muscles (muscles that support the reproductive organs) and perform Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises can help you more easily insert a dilator. If you're not sure how to do this, read Resources
Insertion of a Vaginal Speculum
Inserting a Vaginal Speculum is simple. Performing the operation slowly and slowly does not cause any pain. This process takes about 10-15 minutes.
Start with the smallest dilator in the kit. Apply lubricant to the dilator and vaginal opening. Use a water-based lubricant, which will help the dilator slide into the vagina more easily. Do not use vaseline as it can cause irritation. Avoid using oils and silicone-based lubricants because they do not easily wash off the expander.
To insert a dilator into the vagina:
Slowly insert the round end of the dilator into the vagina with slight pressure. Always insert it straight or slightly downward in the direction of the spine (back), just like inserting a tampon.
Continue to slowly insert the dilator until you feel slight discomfort or muscle tension, then stop. The dilator should be snug but not painful. If you feel pain, don't stop hard. If you do not have any pressure when inserting, you may need to use a larger dilator.
Perform a series of Kegel exercises as described in the reference "Pelvic Floor Muscle (Kegel) Exercise for Women's Sexual Health" These exercises will help you relax the pelvic floor muscles and insert the dilator a little more.
If you still have difficulty inserting the dilator after Kegel exercises, try taking a deep breath. Then, refocus on relaxing the pelvic floor muscles and try to insert the dilator a little more.
Don't worry if you can't fully insert the dilator. Over time, you may be able to take the expander one step further. If you still cannot insert the dilator, contact your healthcare provider.
Once the dilator is in place, follow steps 5 and 6 for 5 to 10 minutes. Add more lubricant if needed during this process.
Gently push the dilator in and out to stretch the length of the vagina.
Gently rotate the dilator into a large circle to stretch the width of the vagina. Repeat this step at the back, middle, and openings of the vagina.
Some women find it helpful to work with more than one dilator. For example, some women may use a larger dilator at the opening of the vagina and a smaller dilator inside the vagina until they can fully use the next dilator.
After completing steps 1 to 6, remove the dilator.
Rinse the dilator with hot soapy water. Then dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Follow the instructions in the toolkit for storage.
After using a Vaginal Speculum
You may experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding while using or after using the dilator. this is normal. You may need to wear panty liners after dilator treatment. If you have a lot of bleeding, such as bleeding from an absorbent sanitary napkin (pad), or if bleeding persists for more than 1 day, call your health care provider.
If you have frequent urinary tract infections (UTI), you may need to urinate (urinate) after using a dilator.
If you have any questions or problems, talk to your healthcare provider at your next appointment.
