Vaginal Speculum therapy will help prevent the vagina from becoming narrow. It also helps to maintain vaginal elasticity.

Vaginal Speculum therapy will help:

Your health care provider will perform a full pelvic exam (when a doctor or nurse checks your vulva and internal genital organs).

Make the pelvic exam more comfortable.

Relieve sexual discomfort

Getting started with Vaginal Speculum treatment

Find a time and a quiet place to stay alone. Try to choose a space that will make you feel relaxed. Your bedroom is usually a comfortable place to have expansion therapy. Before starting, relax the pelvic floor muscles and take a deep breath.

First, enter a comfortable position:

Lie down, put your feet flat on the bed or sofa, and bend your knees slightly.

Open your legs and make them shoulder-width apart. If you find this to be a problem, you can place the pillow under your knees for support.

Make sure you can easily touch the opening of the vagina with your hand. If necessary, use a hand mirror to view the vaginal opening.

Find your pelvic floor muscles (the muscles that support the genitals) and perform the Kegel exercise. Kegel exercises can help you insert the expander more easily. If you are not sure how to do this, read the reference pelvic floor muscle (Kegel) women's exercise to improve sexual health.

Insert Vaginal Speculum

Inserting a Vaginal Speculum is simple. Operating slowly and slowly does not cause any pain. This process takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

Start with the smallest size expander in the kit. Apply lubricant to the dilator and vaginal opening. Use water-based lubricants such as Astroglide® or K-Y®. This will help the dilator slide into the vagina more easily. Do not use Vaseline® because it can cause irritation. Avoid using oil and silicone based lubricants because they do not easily wash off the dilator.

To insert the dilator into the vagina, perform the following steps:

Slowly insert the rounded end of the dilator into the vagina with gentle pressure. Always insert in a straight (backward) spine direction (or at a slightly downward angle), just like inserting a tampon.

Continue to slowly insert the dilator until you feel mild discomfort or muscle tension and then stop. The dilator should be snug but not painful. If you feel pain, do not stop with force. If you do not have any pressure when inserting, you may need to use a larger size expander.

A series of Kegel exercises were performed as described in the reference "Kegel Exercises for Women to Improve Sexual Health". These exercises will help you relax the pelvic floor muscles and insert the dilator a little more.

If it is still difficult to insert the dilator after the Kegel exercise, try taking a deep breath. Then, refocus on relaxing the pelvic floor muscles and try to insert the dilator a little more.

Don't worry if you can't fully insert the dilator. As time goes by, you may be able to take the expander a step further. If you still can't insert the dilator, contact your healthcare provider.

Once the dilator is in place, follow steps 5 and 6 for 5 to 10 minutes. More lubricant can be added if needed during this process.

Gently push and push the dilator to lengthen the length of the vagina.

Gently rotate the dilator into a large circle to stretch the width of the vagina. Repeat this step at the back, middle and opening of the vagina.

Some women find it helpful to work with more than one dilator. For example, some women may use larger dilators at the vaginal opening and smaller dilators inside the vagina until they are fully able to use the next size dilator.

After completing steps 1 through 6, remove the dilator.

Wash the dilator with hot soapy water. Then dry it with a clean towel or paper towel. Follow the instructions in the toolkit to store.

After using a Vaginal Speculum

You may have a small amount of vaginal bleeding when using the dilator or after using it. This is normal. You may need to wear a panty liner after the dilator treatment. Call your health care provider if you have too much bleeding, such as bleeding that absorbs a sanitary napkin (pad), or if the bleeding lasts longer than one day.

If you have a frequent urinary tract infection (UTI), you may have to urinate (after urinating) after using the dilator.
