Hand-held spotlights are one of the most useful outdoor tools you can use for housework, such as tracking injured deer and finding your favorite night fishing spot.

When darkness is at your campsite, nothing is more useful than holding a spotlight. With just a single switch or a trigger, you can instantly illuminate objects that are near or far, regardless of distance. In order to make a good choice, ask yourself three questions: how much light do you need, which power source do you want to use, and the size of the handheld spotlight that is most suitable for use.

brightness
The brightness of a spotlight (the most important factor many people think of when choosing a lamp) is usually measured in lumens. By definition, a lumens is "a unit of luminous flux in the International System of Units, which is equal to the amount of light emitted by a candela-intensity light source through solid angles in all directions equally." Although that may not be very useful, know that the higher the lumens, the brighter the beam. On spotlights, the lumen level is usually indicated by the lamp itself and the bulb used. Generally, the higher the lumens level, the higher the price you will pay. But note that brightening is not always better. If you want to see something clearly from a long distance, it is best to use a very bright flashlight. But really bright lights make other chores more difficult. For example, when blood flows through a deer tail, too bright light causes everything it shines to be washed away, making blood droplets more visible than in dim light.

Energy source
How you want to power the spotlight is also an important factor. Most batteries run on a cigarette adapter using a replaceable battery, a rechargeable battery or the vehicle's 12 volt battery. Each type has trade-offs. Replaceable battery spotlights are usually less powerful and therefore less bright. But when the battery runs out, you just need to replace it and move on. Rechargeable battery lights are usually lighter and brighter than replaceable battery lights, but once the battery is dead, you will be in the dark. The lights that drain the vehicle's battery are sturdy and easy to use, but can only be used a few feet from the vehicle. Consider how and where to use lights to choose the best power source.

size
Depending on another important factor you plan to use, size can determine whether you like the spotlight or not. If you plan to bring light back a few miles into the wilderness, definitely smaller. On the other hand, if you are towing it in a vehicle and have a place to store it in an emergency, a very large flashlight may meet your needs. Finally, choose the size that works best with your spotlight most of the time.
