Is full-stack a skill?

"Full-stack" is not a single skill, but rather a label or role that implies proficiency in multiple skills across the software development stack. Being a full-stack developer means you are capable of working on both:

  • Frontend (client-side): e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.

  • Backend (server-side): e.g., Node.js, Python (Django, Flask), Ruby on Rails, Java, etc.

  • Database management: e.g., SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL), NoSQL (MongoDB).

  • Optionally, DevOps, APIs, cloud services, and version control.

So, calling "full-stack" a skill is imprecise. It’s more accurate to say:

“Full-stack development is a combination of multiple skills across the web development stack.”

If you're putting this on a résumé or LinkedIn profile, it's fine to say "Full-stack developer" as a role or use "Full-stack development" as an area of expertise—but under that, be sure to list the specific technologies and skills you’re proficient in.
