What is Kohlefaser?

The kohlefaser is produced using very fine strands of carbon atoms. These are very strong strands and very light in weight compared to metal such as steel or aluminum.   • Polyacrylinitril - PAN (Raw Material) Preparation.
    The whole process starts with a raw material, commonly Polyacrylnitril (PAN) that is a polymer. The carbon fibers are made out of the long strands of PAN fibers.
  • Oxidation
    This is then followed by heating of the PAN fibers in air to approximately 200-300degC. This enhances the material and sets it to the next process.
  • Carbonization
    The process of carbonization involves heating the fibers in a controlled atmosphere that is usually without oxygen under high temperatures (exceeding 1,000degC). This process eliminates everything except carbon and only pure carbon fibers are left.
  • Surface Treatment
    The fibers must be surface treated after being carbonized to enhance bonding with resins or other materials. This refers to subjecting them to special chemicals.
  • Sizing and Weaving
    The last step is the application of some sort of protective coating, and the fibers are then woven into cloths or formed into strands that can be utilized in various goods.
