Technical Overview of Hastelloy C276 Flat and Bar Products
Nickel based alloys intended for extremely aggressive chemical environments are under strict international specifications which are typical of refineries, fertilizer plants, and marine systems. Out of those materials, the fabrications of Hastelloy C276 Plate in the UAE are most of the time based on the compliance with ASTM B575 and ASME SB575 standards enabling the equipment to stand exposure, for example, to chlorides, sulfuric acid and wet chlorine.
Plates are usually delivered in a solution annealed state with thickness tolerances that are pressure vessel codes suitable, generally from 4 mm to 60 mm, depending on the rolling method. The UNS N10276 molybdenum high and chromium-rich grade alloy is capable of resisting pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking under elevated temperature due to its material characteristics. Sheet metals are usually a complement to forgings and pipes when building of reactors, absorbers, and heat exchangers in accordance with EN and ASTM dimensional standards. Welds are generally made with matching filler metal, controlled heat input, and post weld inspection being done to continue corrosion resistance in mixed acid process streams.
Quality control is done through ultrasonic testing, chemical analysis, and mechanical verification to make sure that the conformity to the project specification is kept, especially in the case of critical services involving high pressure, fluctuating temperatures, and exposure to corrosive fluids applications.
For machining parts and rotating equipment, a German preference for Hastelloy C276 round bar is seen due to the availability of hot rolled, cold drawn, and centerless ground conditions. Bars made to ASTM B574 standards range from 8 mm to 250 mm in diameter, thus allowing the production of shafts, fasteners, and valve parts with uniform mechanical properties.
