Most players hit endgame in Arknights: Endfield and think the hard part is over once gold gear starts dropping. It really isn't. The real tuning starts with Gear Artificing, and that's where a build stops feeling merely usable and starts feeling tailored. If you've already been farming, trading, or even browsing Arknights endfield accounts to see what optimized setups look like, you'll notice the same thing pretty fast: strong gear alone doesn't carry a character. What matters is how those substats line up with the Operator you're building, and Artificing is the system that lets you lock that in for good.
How the feature opens up
You won't get access to it at the start, so don't waste time hunting menus that aren't there yet. Gear Artificing shows up later, once you've pushed far enough into the Wuling story route. At some point, a side quest tied to the system appears, and it sends you to the Bureau of Swordmancers in Wuling City. Talk to the NPC there and that's it, the Artificing tab gets added to Gear Assembly as a permanent feature. No weird timer, no temporary unlock. A lot of people miss how important that is, because once it's available, your whole approach to duplicate gear should change.
What actually happens in the menu
Inside Gear Assembly, the Artificing tab lets you choose a valid piece of gear, usually high-rarity equipment worth investing in, and then select a substat to improve. Sounds simple at first. It's not. Every item has a fixed cap on how many times one stat can be boosted, so each decision has weight. If you dump attempts into the wrong line early, you can ruin that item's ceiling without realizing it. That's why experienced players don't just click whatever looks decent in the moment. They look at the full build first, then decide whether a stat is actually core to damage, scaling, or utility. It's a small menu, but it asks for long-term thinking.
The cost and the risk
The price is where most players hesitate, and honestly, fair enough. Artificing asks for a spare piece from the same slot and rarity, and sometimes that fodder gear also needs to match certain stat rules. On top of that, you'll spend regional Catalysts, including the ones tied to Wuling's Stock Redistribution system. So yes, duplicate gear suddenly becomes valuable, and cleaning your inventory without checking can hurt you later. Then there's the success rate. Attempts can fail. That stings, especially when the sacrificed item wasn't easy to replace. Still, the system isn't pure cruelty. Failed attempts quietly build toward better odds, and if your luck keeps going south, the game eventually forces a success.
Where smart players spend their attempts
The best use of Gear Artificing is narrow, not broad. Don't try to polish every item you own. Focus on pieces that already fit your Operator and push the stats that actually define performance, whether that's offensive scaling, direct attribute conversion, or a key combat multiplier. A lot of players spread materials too thin and end up with several average items instead of one great one. It's usually better to commit with a plan, save your matching dupes, and wait for the right piece.
