Redefining Style and Comfort: The All-New Hyundai Verna

The Korean car manufacturer recently launched the sixth generation, Hyundai Verna. It goes up against the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Honda City. The carmaker stepped up its game in the design department. Further, there are other Hyundai cars that have the same design language as the new Verna. That said, the most notable design feature is the running LED light at the front.

At the same time, the Hyundai Verna is also the most powerful sedan in India in the segment, be it petrol or turbo-petrol. Currently, there is no diesel option.

The starting ex-showroom price of the new Verna is Rs 10.90 lakh, making it cheaper than the Honda City, Skoda Slavia and the Honda City. But, it is worth mentioning that it is an introductory price. It is subject to change without any prior notice to the customer.

Specifications

For starters, you should know that this recently launched Hyundai Verna is built on Hyundai’s newly designed platform. It is a front-wheel drive car, though.

Under the hood, it can either be had with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine or a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. As for the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, it is capable to generate 113.18 bhp at 6300 rpm and 143.8 Nm of peak torque at 4500 rpm. On the other hand, the turbo-petrol mill is tuned to churn out 157.57 bhp at 5500 rpm and 253 Nm of peak torque at 3500 rpm. Given the Verna price, the performance of this sedan is really impressive.

In terms of transmission, the naturally-aspirated petrol engine can either be had with a six-speed manual or a CVT. The six-speed manual is also standard to the turbocharged engine but it can also be had with a seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

With the given combinations of engine and transmission, the naturally-aspirated petrol- manual- and automatic return a mileage of 18.6 km/l and 19.6 km/l, respectively. In parallel, the turbo-petrol- manual- and automatic return a mileage of 20 km/l and 20.6 km/l, respectively. The real-world mileage can, however, vary with the individuals’ driving styles and local traffic conditions.

The Hyundai Verna has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres.

Furthermore, the Hyundai Verna has always been a comfort-oriented vehicle but this time, you can expect a sportier driveability as the suspension is tuned on a slightly stiffer side. That said, this vehicle is also designed by keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind. So, it can sail through the bumps and other undulations with ease without letting the passengers jostle much. However, it is always recommended to take a test drive of a vehicle so that you can have a better understanding of the vehicle. You can also check out the Hyundai Verna review here to know more about its features and driveability.

As for the suspension setup, this vehicle has a MacPherson Strut with Coil Springs at the front and Coupled Torsion Beam Axle suspension at the rear. Further, it has gas-filled shock absorbers. Apart from the suspenion setup, the braking duties are taken care of by standard disc-drum brakes and optional all-disc brakes. The top model of the Hyundai Verna has the latter brake setup.

The tyre size is the same across the variants, though. It runs on 16-inch rims with a tyre profile of 205/55 R16. Moreover, alloy wheels are standard across the variants.

Proportions

The new Hyundai Verna has a length of 4535mm, a width of 1765mm, a height of 1475mm, and it has a wheelbase of 2670mm. It has the longest wheelbase in the segment, followed by the Volkswagen Virtus’s 2651mm. Just so you know, the wheelbase can be used as an indicator to know the amount of legroom. So, it should be safe to say that the Hyundai Verna can offer better legroom than the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Honda City.

But the new Verna’s ground clearance seems to be similar to the new Honda City’s 165mm. For your reference, the VW-group sedans- the Virtus and the Slavia have the highest ground clearance in the business, rated at 179mm.

As you are already aware, Indian roads have a lot of potholes and rough patches, as a result, it is always better to have a vehicle with a high ground clearance.

The new Verna also boasts a better boot capacity, which is rated at 528 litres. Currently, this sedan has the capacity, followed by Virtus’s and Slavia’s 521 litres.

Features

The top model of the Hyundai Verna is loaded with features, be it entertainment, user interaction or safety. Let’s start with its safety features. The most notable safety offering is LEVEL-2 ADAS, which comprises lane departure warning, forward collision warning, high-beam assist, blind spot detection, lane departure prevention, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Hyundai Verna is the second vehicle to offer ADAS after the Honda City. You can check out the Honda City price here.

Other safety features include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, child-seat anchorages, an electronic anti-glare IRVM, a speed-sensing door lock, a child-safety lock, etc. Further, it hasn’t received any safety rating as it is due for a crash test.

As for braking and traction, the top model of the Hyundai Verna has ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-hold control, and traction control.

Keeping the safety features aside, the new Verna has an auto HVAC, cruise control, keyless start/stop button, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, an electrically-adjustable driver seat, and a leather upholstery with dual tone colour scheme. It also has a leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel along with a leather-wrapped gearknob.

For added comfort, this Korean sedan offers front-ventilated seats (heating and cooling functions), electrically-adjustable ORVMs, a one-touch window (driver’s side only), an electric tailgate release, auto-headlights, and voice commands.

Besides those, this Hyundai cars is also equipped with dual screens- one as an infotainment screen and another as an instrument cluster. The infotainment system comprises a 10-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which gets several connectivity features, such as Bluetooth, auxiliary, USB, and iPod compatibility.

It also offers 64-colour ambient lighting and nature-sound effects.

There are other features as well. You can access the curated list of features and specifications of the Hyundai Verna and can compare them with its direct rivals on the autoX website. Let’s now move on to the figures.
