What is Gate Valve? 

Gate Valve is a linear motion valve employed to begin or discontinue liquid flow through a pipeline. It works by raising or lowering the gate (wedge) within the valve body- offering very little flow restriction when opened. 

Components of Gate Valve 

1. Valve Body – Primary casing where internal components reside. 

2. Gate/Wedge – Blocks or permits flow based on its position. 

3. Stem – Links the gate to the handwheel or actuator. 

5. Bonnet – Encloses the stem and internal mechanisms. 

6. Seats – Gives a sealing surface for the gate to come into contact against. 

Working Mechanism of a Gate Valve 

The gate valve works on the rotation of the handwheel, which in turn moves the stem up or down. The movement lifts or drops the gate and allows or prevents the flow. It is not to be used for throttling because it can damage the seat and gate.
