Turks and Caicos Island Taxi Tips for First Time Visitors
If you are planning your first trip to Turks and Caicos? With its stunning beaches and laid-back island vibe, getting around is part of the experience. Unlike many destinations, taxis here work a bit differently so knowing what to expect can save you time, money, and confusion.
1. Taxis Don’t Use Meters
One of the first things visitors notice is that taxis in Turks and Caicos are not metered. Instead, fares are set by the government based on zones and number of passengers. Always ask the price before starting your trip to avoid surprises.
2. Expect Shared Rides
Taxi drivers often pick up multiple passengers heading in the same direction. This is completely normal and helps keep costs down. If you prefer a private ride, you can request one—but expect to pay a higher fare.
3. Know the Popular Routes
Most taxis operate around Providenciales (Provo), especially between:
- Providenciales International Airport (PLS)
- Grace Bay hotels and resorts
- Beaches, restaurants, and shopping areas
- Having your destination clearly in mind helps drivers quote accurate fares.
Taxis are readily available at the airport, and there’s usually no need to pre-book. However, during peak travel times, you may experience short waits, so patience helps.
