MG Comet Vs. Tata Tiago EV: Differences you need to know

In terms of shape and size, these two electric vehicles are poles apart. The MG Comet is the cheapest all-electric vehicle on the market. At the same time, this MG EV is also currently the smallest four-wheeler in the country.

Both are recently-launched electric vehicles;  however, the Tiago EV was the cheapest EV before the arrival of the MG Comet EV. As for the Comet EV price, this vehicle has a starting price of Rs 7.98 lakh, while the Tata Tiago EV has a starting price of Rs 8.69 lakh. All are ex-showroom prices.

If you look at the images of the MG Comet EV, you may think of it as a non-practical car for riding with family along with luggage. And yes, it is like that. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago EV has the same shape and size as its gasoline version. That car is hands down more practical than the Comet. So, let’s see how the new MG Comet stacks up against the Tata Tiago EV in terms of features and specifications.

Let’s begin, then!

Specifications

As far as the specifications are concerned, the MG Comet EV is only available with a 17.3 kWh battery pack, accompanied by a 3.3 kW AC charger. This battery pack placed under the hood of the MG Comet is tuned to churn out 41.42 bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque. MG has placed its battery at the centre of the chassis. That battery placement gives an added benefit to the stability. It has a good torque, especially for a car of its size. If you are a torque lover and want an easy-to-park green car, check out the MG Comet price here.

On the other hand, the Tata Tiago EV has two battery pack options: 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh. The smaller battery pack can churn out 58 bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque, while the bigger battery pack is tuned to generate 73 bhp and 114 Nm of peak torque.

Like other EVs, these two are powered by a standard single-speed automatic transmission.

As far as the range is concerned, MG Motors claimed that the Comet can deliver a range of up to 230 km. On the flip side, the indigenous car manufacturer claimed a range of 250 to 315 km on the Tata Tiago EV. Please note that these are claimed mileage figures from the respective companies. The real-world range, however, can differ with the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles. Furthermore, you can check out the full range of Tata cars from their electric portfolio, as they cater to different buyers with different budgets and preferences.

The MG Comet, on the other hand, does not get an optional DC/fast charger. The Tiago EV has more options. You can check out the Tiago EV price list on the autoX website.

Keeping their powertrains aside, both vehicles have a suspension setup, which is suited for Indian roads. You can expect better tuning from the Tiago EV than the Comet, as that product is homegrown. However, it is always recommended to take a test drive, so that you can get a better understanding.

Coming back, the MG Comet EV has a McPherson Strut at the front and a multi-link coil suspension at the rear. On the other hand, the Tata Tiago EV has an independent lower wishbone McPherson dual path suspension at the front and a rear twist beam with coil spring at the rear. It also has hydraulic shock absorbers.

In both cars, braking duties are taken care of by standard disc-drum brakes. Neither of the cars has all-disc brakes. However, the MG Comet runs on 12-inch wheels and has a tyre profile of 145/70 R12, while the Tata Tiago EV has 14-inch wheels with a tyre profile of 175/65 R14.

Features

In terms of features, both cars are well-equipped. Please note that the features listed here belong to the top model of these two cars.

Both have a digital instrument cluster, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, power windows, 12V accessory power outlets, and rear parking sensors with rear cameras.

The MG Comet EV has LED headlights, while the Tata Tiago EV has projector headlights. The Tiago EV has a rain-sensing wiper, which the Comet misses out on. Both have adjustable headlights.

As for entertainment, the Tiago EV has a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, while the MG Comet has a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. Both have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Further, they both have connected car technologies. The connected car technology has features like live location, last parked, vehicle status, upcoming service(s), geo-fence alerts, the status of doors and lights (interior and exterior), and the range left, to name a few.

So, these are a few notable offerings of these two cars.

Prices and Variants

In terms of pricing, both cars are more or less the same. The MG Comet EV has a starting price of Rs 6.99 lakh for the base model, the Executive, and goes up to Rs 9.40 lakh for the top model, the EverGreen.

In parallel, the Tata Tiago EV’s price starts at Rs 6.99 lakh for the base model, the Smart 19.2 kWh, and it goes up to Rs 9.99 lakh for the top model, the Creative Plus 24.0 kWh Fast Charge. All are ex-showroom prices, Delhi.
