I Lost My First PokéRogue Run in the Silliest Way, Then Started Another Immediately

My first Pokerogue run ended because I was too proud to switch Pokémon. I had one starter I liked, refused to rotate anything else in, and watched a battle slowly fall apart while I kept telling myself the next move would fix it. It didn't. Losing felt bad for about ten seconds, and then I was already clicking into another run.

That's basically been my relationship with this Pokémon roguelite ever since. It's a fan-made project rather than an official Nintendo or Game Freak release, but it captures the part of Pokémon I actually enjoy most: building a team, making messy decisions, and seeing how far those decisions carry me.

The First Thing I Noticed Was the Starter Cost

You don't get to just grab six favourites and go. Starter Pokémon each have a cost, and your total has to fit inside a limit. I made the classic mistake of stacking expensive picks because they looked strong, then realized I had almost no room left for anything else. What I actually needed was coverage — different types, someone who could take a hit, and a Pokémon that didn't fold the moment a bad matchup showed up.

After a couple of failed runs, my approach changed. I stopped asking "which Pokémon is strongest?" and started asking "who covers what?" That single shift did more for my results than anything else.

What I Like Most Is the Run Itself

Every run sends you through different biomes with wild Pokémon, trainers, and bosses along the way. There's no Pokémon Center waiting for you either, which I learned the hard way when I treated healing items like they were optional. They really aren't. Items you find or buy after battles can completely reshape a run, and stacking the right ones quietly turns a shaky team into something that survives longer than it should.

Catching Pokémon mid-run is its own reward, because what you catch feeds back into your future starters. That connection between one run and the next is what keeps me coming back. Even a run that ends badly usually leaves me with something new to work with.

That's When I Started Checking the Dex

Early on, I kept guessing. I'd pick a Pokémon because I liked the design, then get surprised when it evolved in a way I didn't expect or when its ability turned out to be almost useless for my team.

That's when I started opening the Pokerogue Dex . It's become my habit before starting a run — checking a Pokémon's typing, its abilities, base stats, and how much it costs as a starter. Sometimes I'll look up evolution requirements or the moves it can learn, and occasionally I check which biome a Pokémon might show up in when I'm hoping to catch something specific.

I probably should have checked the evolution conditions earlier. I remember committing to a Pokémon assuming it would get stronger quickly, only to realize it needed a lot more than I'd planned for. Not a disaster, but definitely a lesson.

I don't use it like a manual. It's more that when I'm wondering "is this actually worth the cost?" I just look it up instead of trusting my memory.

Things My Runs Taught Me

Don't blow your whole starter budget on power. Balance and type coverage matter more than raw stats. Watch your healing items, because nobody's going to bail you out mid-run. Don't ignore Pokémon you catch along the way — they're how your future runs get better. And if you want something different, the Daily Run gives you a shared setup to test yourself against, so everyone's working with the same starting point.

Give It a Try

If you've been playing Pokémon for years and want that team-building feeling with real stakes, PokéRogue is worth your time, especially since it's just a browser game you can start in seconds. Try a run, lose it in a way that stings, and see if you don't immediately want another. And if you do end up playing, tell me how your first run went — I'd bet it went better than mine did.
