Stansted Airport Taxi for Families: Luggage, Car Seats and Pick-Up Tips

Travelling through London Stansted (STN) with children means more bags, more questions and less patience at the end of a long flight. A Stansted airport taxi can take a lot of that stress away, because it takes your family from the terminal straight to your door, with no changes and no dragging suitcases through stations. This guide covers what families need to know before booking: where taxis pick up, how to choose the right vehicle, car seats, airport charges and simple ways to make the journey easier.

WHY A TAXI SUITS MANY FAMILIES

Stansted is in Essex, just off the M11 and about 40 miles from central London. The Stansted Express runs from a station beneath the terminal to London Liverpool Street in about 48 minutes, and National Express coaches run to several London stops around the clock. Both are good options, but with young children, pushchairs and several large cases, the onward Tube or bus legs can be hard work.

A taxi takes you door to door. One fare is shared by the whole family, while train tickets are bought per person, so once you add up everyone’s tickets and onward travel, a taxi can compare well. It also helps if your flight lands late at night or leaves very early, when public transport is limited and children are tired.

The train can still be the better choice for a parent travelling alone with one child and light bags, staying near Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale. Compare the full door-to-door journey before deciding.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT VEHICLE

The most common family mistake is booking a car that is too small. A standard saloon suits a couple with suitcases, but a family with several large cases, a pushchair, a travel cot or sports equipment may need an estate car, an MPV or a minibus.

When you book, give the exact number of passengers, including children and babies, and list every bag and bulky item. Booking too small a vehicle can mean waiting for a second car or a refused pickup, which costs far more than choosing the right size from the start.

CAR SEATS AND CHILD SEATS

Not every taxi carries child seats, and policies vary between operators. Some provide child seats on request, some charge for them, and some only offer them in certain vehicle types such as MPVs.

Ask about child seats when you book, not on the day. Tell the operator your children’s ages, and confirm whether seats are included, charged separately or not available. If you prefer to use your own seat, mention it so the driver knows to allow time and space for fitting it.

WHERE TAXIS PICK UP AT STANSTED

Stansted has a single passenger terminal, but pre-booked taxis do not wait at the kerb outside it. Where you meet your driver depends on how you booked.

Short Stay car parks: most pre-booked drivers wait in the Green or Blue Short Stay car parks, which the airport lists for pick-ups. According to the airport, Green is a five to eight-minute walk along a covered route, and Blue takes 10 to 12 minutes. With children and luggage, that difference matters.

Meet and greet: the driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your bags and walks you to the car. For families, this is often the easiest option, as you do not have to find the car while managing children and luggage. Some operators charge extra for it because the driver is parked for longer.

Mid Stay free zone: the Mid Stay car park has a free pick-up area for up to an hour, linked to the terminal by a free 24-hour shuttle bus. It is mostly used by friends and family collecting passengers.

Arrivals taxi desk: if you have not booked ahead, the airport’s on-site taxi provider has a reservation desk in the international arrivals area. With children, booking in advance is usually the calmer choice.

If you are arriving on a domestic flight, tell your driver: Stansted opened a separate domestic arrivals building in July 2025.

AIRPORT CHARGES AND YOUR FARE

There is no single fixed price for a Stansted taxi, and an average figure would be misleading. Your fare depends on your exact address, the time and day, traffic, vehicle size, the number of passengers and bags, waiting time and extras such as meet and greet or child seats.

Airport charges are separate from the fare. As of October 2026, the airport lists Short Stay pick-up charges from £13 for up to 30 minutes and £21 for up to an hour. For departures, the Express Set Down drop-off area outside the terminal costs £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 for longer, with a 30-minute maximum. Some operators include these charges in the fare; others add them on, so always ask.

HOW TO GET AN ACCURATE QUOTE

When comparing providers, look for a dedicated Stansted airport taxi booking page that asks for your flight number, full address, passengers and luggage, as these usually price your real journey rather than giving a rough estimate. For example: Stansted airport taxi - https://ltpcars.com/airport-transfers/stansted-airport-taxi/

Share these details when you book:

  • whether you are travelling to or from Stansted
  • your full address and postcode
  • flight number, date and time
  • number of adults, children and babies
  • number of bags and bulky items such as pushchairs
  • child seat needs and children’s ages
  • vehicle type
  • meet and greet or standard pickup

Before you confirm, ask how much free waiting time is included, whether airport charges and child seats are in the price, where the driver will meet you, what the cancellation terms are and whether the quote is the total you will pay.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER FAMILY JOURNEY

  • Book well ahead, especially in school holidays.
  • Give your flight number so the operator can track delays.
  • Keep snacks, water and a small bag of essentials out of the main luggage.
  • Message your driver after passport control and baggage reclaim, not when the plane lands.
  • Keep your phone charged and the operator’s number saved offline.
  • For departures, set your pickup time from your airline’s recommended arrival time, plus a buffer for traffic and children.

TRAVELLING SAFELY

In London, minicabs and private-hire cars must be booked through a licensed operator. Only travel in a car you have booked, and check the driver’s name and vehicle details against your booking before your family gets in.

IS PRE-BOOKING WORTH IT?

For families, pre-booking brings certainty rather than a guaranteed saving. You know the price before you travel, you get a vehicle big enough for everyone and everything, child seats can be arranged in advance, and many operators track your flight if it lands late.

Check that the operator’s website explains its Stansted pickup arrangements, child seat policy, waiting time and what the price includes. LTP Cars is one example of a provider that publishes Stansted transfer information online: https://ltpcars.com/

FINAL THOUGHTS

A family trip through Stansted goes much more smoothly when the transfer is planned. Choose a vehicle big enough for your luggage, arrange child seats in advance, agree the meeting point, check whether airport charges are included and confirm the total before you travel. Then the journey home can be as relaxed as the holiday itself.
